Barrier-Free Zero Entry Shower
With a wide door frame and no barrier or transition, this custom tile shower is easy to get into and out of for a wide range of people, including those with limited-mobility and individuals using wheelchairs or wheelchair-users. This bathroom will offer the family living in this home easy access for decades to come, and will be usable by guests.
Lever Doorknobs
Lever doorknobs can sometimes mean the difference between a regular room, and a room that isn't accessible at all, for some people. Levers are used throughout this home, and look simply elegant.
Paddle Switches
With flipper switches throughout the house, turning on and off lights and fans has never been more convenient. Universal Design features ideally have a wide range of error allowed, and flippers are easier to use with hands full of groceries, with arthritis, or Parkinson's or with a variety of disabilities and daily situation.
Receptacle Placement
Placement of plugs in a home is often an after thought, but can make a large impact on independence with age and disability. Raising plugs further from the floor allows for easier use for everyone.
Wider Door Frames
Wider door frames feel luxury in any setting. But, they can also accommodate a wider variety of people and needs, as well as wheelchairs, strollers and wide furniture. They cost significantly less to build in a custom home, then they cost to add after a build is complete and in place. This home features wide doors, as part of its Universal Design Features.
Lower Air Returns
Air returns that are closer to the floor are easier for everyone to change. Taking out a ladder to reach a return on the ceiling might not be a big deal for some, at some points in their life. But easier is always more accessible to more people. When designing a Universal Design home, more inclusion is the key. And this feature is part of that thoughtful design.
