Our Universal Design Blog

We believe a large, important part of building homes is building communityWith this in mind, we started this Universal Design Blog.

Together, we will explore new home builds with photo essays that show how seamlessly integrated Universal Design can be in a home. In addition, we will create articles on the history and future of Universal Design, with feature guest #ownvoices writers and tips and tricks for accessibility. Also, we will share book reviews and test new products that further the conversation on inclusion.

Most importantly, though: together our voices can build a future for our communities where inclusion, accessibility and Universal Design are the default not the exception. I am so glad that you are here. I look forward to building something beautiful together.

Universal Design makes things safer, easier and more convenient for everyone.

In making homes safer, easier and more convenient for all bodies, Universal Design plans for all the potential changes that come with time and life.

Everyone, even the most able-bodied person, passes through different phases in their life: childhood, periods of temporary illness, injury and old age. Universal Design involves creating spaces and products so that everything can be used by the widest range of people possible.

Going further than simple accessibility, utilizing principles of Universal Design allows us as designers and builders to recognize that there is a wide spectrum of human abilities. By designing for this human diversity, we can create a home that will be easier for all people to use. From friends and family, party guests and house guests: Everyone in your life, over time and through all of life’s changes, will feel welcome and at home with Universal Design homes.

Meet Poppy: He's 'Our Why' as Builders

-Personal Essay-

Everyone’s ‘Why’ for coming to Universal Design is likely different. As a family business, it will be no surprise that our ‘Why’ is family. Poppy is the grandpa of our Founder and President Josh Mauney. And, Poppy built every house he ever lived in, except his last. Part of what motivates us to build Universal Design homes is to allow more people to be comfortable and to stay in their own home, even as life changes. Poppy always wanted to help people. We hope, in telling his story, we will continue his legacy of helping people. Read the Story….

The History of Universal Design

-An #OwnVoices Article-

In this #ownvoices article detailing the History of Universal Design, we also see a history of inclusion, of disability rights, and accommodations. While a diversity of abilities and a wide spectrum of disabilities has always been a part of the human experience, the way we as a society approach difference in a positive, helpful manner is relatively new. Thus, the History of Universal Design is a relatively recent one that is tied to the modern increase in human quality of life.

The Principles of Universal Design

-An #OwnVoices Article-

With thoughtful design, our communities can become more intuitive and inclusive. This goes for homes as well as parks, and also applies to the products and services we use daily. These principles have a long history in North Carolina, and we are proud to continue that history into the future through researched articles like this one on The Principles of Universal Design
